Books color our world with their stories! Summer reading is here at the Montgomery City Public Library! This year’s theme is “Color Our World.” We’re bringing every color to the library this year with art-themed summer reading programs, crafts, and activities. All programs are free, and no library card is required to participate. Join us for a colorful, fun summer reading starting June 1st.

Our first program will be Pastiche (meaning a work of art imitating that of another) Night, which will be on June 4th from 6-8 pm and will be for teens and adults.

Make sure to visit the library to find out what programs you will need to sign up for. Certain programs have a limited spots available, so make sure to sign up early.

Our summer reading programs at the library will be on June 9th, June 23rd, July 7th, and July 21st.  The 10 am programs will be for ages 0-5.  The 2 pm will be for school-age children (ages 5-11).  Mrs. Katie will take the children on an adventure through the rainbow with programs about colors, artists, and their famous works. If your child is in summer school, fear not, Mrs. Katie will make weekly visits to the elementary school to do programs as well!

On June 6th from 9 am-12 pm, the library will celebrate National Donut Day with a fun craft for ages 5-adult.

What happens when someone finds a magic crayon? Find out when MCPL’s Movie Night features “Harold and the Purple Crayon”. This movie is for all ages and will be shown at the MCPL Community Room at 7 pm on June 7th. Bring lawn chairs and snacks to enjoy.

On June 18th at 10 am, Will Stuck will perform “Pigment of Your Imagination,” and on June 23rd at 2 pm, Fishin’ Magician will be spreading magic and fun with a special show. Both performances are for all ages, but are more geared towards school-age children.

International Mud Day activities will occur on June 28th from 9 am to 12 pm at MCPL. Explore with all your senses during this muddy adventure.  Come in clothes that can get dirty!

July holds just as many adventures as June!  There will be a Missouri Department of Conservation insect program at 3 pm on July 1st, a ukulele workshop for teens and adults on July 10th at 2 pm followed by a ukulele concert at 7 pm, and a special Christmas in July event featuring Santa on July 25th from 1-3 pm. We will also have an interactive movie night showing of the “Wizard of Oz” on July 26th at 7 pm.

Many other events will be hosted at MCPL over the summer, such as teen and adult crafts, Books & Beyond, Lego Club, and Teen Nights.  Please check the Montgomery City Public Library’s Facebook page or website for more information.  Remember, these events are free, and you do not need a library card to attend.

You can also register to be a part of the summer reading program and have opportunities to win prizes.  There are categories for Babies-Preschool (0-5), School-Aged Children (5-12), Teens (12-18), and Adults (18+).  Each group has a certain number of minutes to read and activities to complete.  Those who complete the minutes and activities will have their name placed in a drawing for prizes.  This summer’s prizes include various art kits for each category group.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.  The Montgomery City Public Library would like to thank the Missouri State Library for awarding us a grant for funding these summer reading adventures!
