Books color our world with their stories! Summer reading is here at the Montgomery City Public Library! This year’s theme is “Color Our World.”

We’re bringing every color to the library this year with art-themed summer reading programs, crafts, and activities. All programs are free, and no library card is required to participate. Join us for a colorful, fun summer reading program starting June 1st. Our first program will be Pastiche Night, which will be on June 4th from 6:00-8:00 pm and will be for teens and adults. This creative event is sure to be lots of fun! Come find out what Pastiche means!

Make sure to visit the library to find out what programs require registration.  Certain programs have limited spots available, so make sure to sign-up early.

On June 6th from 9:00 am-12:00 pm, the library will celebrate National Donut Day with a fun craft for ages 5 to adult.

What happens when someone finds a magic crayon? Find out when MCPL’s Movie Night features “Harold and the Purple Crayon”. This movie is for all ages and will be shown in the MCPL Community Room at 7:00 pm on June 7th. Bring lawn chairs and snacks to enjoy.

Our summer reading programs at the library will be on June 9th, June 23rd, July 7th, and July 21st.  The 10:00 am programs will be for ages 0-5.  The 2:00 pm will be for school-age children (ages 5-11).  Mrs. Katie will take the children on an adventure through the rainbow with programs about colors, artists, and their famous works. If your child is in summer school, fear not, Mrs. Katie will make weekly visits to the elementary school to do programs as well!

On June 18th at 10:00 am, Will Stuck will perform “Pigment of Your Imagination” and on June 23rd at 2:00 pm, Fishin’ Magician will be spreading magic and fun with a special show. Both performances are for all ages, but are more geared towards children.

International Mud Day activities will occur on June 28th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at MCPL.  Explore with all your senses during this muddy adventure.  Come in clothes that can get dirty!  The firetruck will be there to rinse off all the mud.

July holds just as many colorful events as June!  There will be a Missouri Department of Conservation insect program at 3:00 pm on July 1st, a ukulele workshop for teens and adults on July 10th at 2:00 pm, followed by a ukulele concert at 7:00 pm, and a special Christmas in July event featuring Santa on July 25th from 1:00-3:00 pm. We will also have an interactive movie night showing of the “Wizard of Oz” on July 26th at 7:00 pm in the MCPL Community Room. We will go over the rainbow and join Dorothy and her friends as they travel down the yellow brick road.

Teens and adults also have special summer reading activities.  On June 10th, teens and adults will make a scarf from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.  Teens will do Glow Painting on June 30th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.  Adults will make Alcohol Ink Coasters on Tuesday, July 8th, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. The UKE 66 ukulele workshop is for teens and adults on July 10th from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. On July 28th, teens will make Locker Lamps from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

Many other events will be hosted at MCPL over the summer, such as teen and adult crafts, Books & Beyond, Lego Club, and Teen Nights.  Please check the Montgomery City Public Library’s Facebook page or website for more information.  Remember that these events are free, and you do not need a library card to participate.

You can also register to be a part of the summer reading program and have opportunities to win prizes.  There are categories for Babies-Preschool (0-5), School-Aged Children (5-12), Teens (12-18), and Adults (18+).  Each group has a certain number of minutes to read and activities to complete.  Those who complete the minutes and activities will have their name placed in a drawing for prizes.  This summer’s prizes include various art kits for each age group.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.  The Montgomery City Public Library would like to thank the Missouri State Library for awarding us a grant for funds to pay for these summer reading activities!
